In February 2026 alone, 14 independent coffee shops marked anniversary milestones. The shortest run is one year. The longest is 22.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about half of small businesses make it to year five. The hospitality industry is even less forgiving. Independent coffee shops operating without the marketing budgets and supply chain leverage of national chains face long odds by almost any measure.
And yet, more than 70 percent of the coffee shops launched through Crimson Cup’s 7 Steps to Success program are still open five or more years later.
Success in specialty coffee is not a windfall. It is a harvest. It grows when everything comes together: exceptional coffee, precise drink preparation, community focus, disciplined operations, plus the grit to keep showing up year after year for the people who depend on you.
This February, 14 shops add to that record. One is brand new. One has been open for 22 years. Most are somewhere in between, quietly defying the odds in small towns and city neighborhoods across seven states. Here is what staying power looks like.
Day One: The Brickhouse Social – Cambridge, Ohio
The Brickhouse Social completed training on February 13, 2026, in Cambridge, Ohio, with a soft opening shortly thereafter.
Every shop on this list started exactly here, with a first day, a first customer, and the combination of excitement and terror that comes with putting everything on the line.
The doors open, the espresso machine hums, and a new chapter begins. Welcome to the community. Welcome to the work.
Year One: Harder Than It Looks
Surviving the first year requires more than good coffee. It requires building a base of regulars who choose you over every other option, every single morning. Two shops hit that mark.
Main Ground Coffee – Groveport, Ohio (February 10, 2025)
In Groveport, Ohio, Avery Ward opened Main Ground Coffee in the former site of his family’s longtime Italian restaurant and his grandfather’s grocery store.
With support from Crimson Cup, he transformed the historic space into a cozy, modern cafe praised for its craft drinks and local roots. The new shop celebrates the family’s history in Groveport while giving the community a fresh reason to gather on Main Street.
Stitch Coffee – Canton, Georgia (February 17, 2025)

After opening their first shop in New Jersey with Crimson Cup, Dave and Geralyn Hickey returned to the 7 Steps program for their Georgia launch.
Year Three: Finding the Rhythm
By year three, the guesswork is gone. The regulars know the menu. The seasonal specials have a following. The shop no longer feels like a startup.
The Well Coffee Co. (formerly Sister Bean’s) – Louisville, Kentucky (February 6, 2023)
Celebrating three years in Louisville, including a rebrand that marked a new chapter, The Well Coffee Co. did more than change its name. It clarified its identity and retained its customers. That is how independent shops grow without losing their footing.
Year Four: Independent Coffee Is Not a Trend. It’s Infrastructure.
Four shops hit the four-year mark this February. Four years of early mornings, custom menus, events, and the daily proof that locally owned coffee is vital to community life.
Java’s Cyber Espresso Bar – Hilliard, Ohio (February 1, 2022)

The shop is part of a growing multi-location operation, a result of building something worth replicating.
The original location opened sixteen years ago in the Columbus Public Main Library. We’ll be celebrating its anniversary in April.
Vita Nova Creatives & Coffee – Nokesville, Virginia (February 4, 2022)

Family-owned and rooted in the belief that relationship matters, the shop fosters an open, welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the door. A small play area gives energetic kids a place of their own, making it easier for parents to linger, connect, and feel at home. Four years in, the regulars are loyal in the way that only happens when a shop earns it.
The Well Coffee House – East Boston, Massachusetts (February 11, 2022)

The Well Coffee House – Everett, Massachusetts (February 11, 2022)
Same anniversary month, different neighborhood. The Everett location of The Well became one of four nonprofit coffee shops operated by The Church of The Well.
Year Five: Past the Point Where Most Don’t Make It
Angie’s Sugar Buzz Bakery – Sandwich, Illinois (February 5, 2021)
Five years ago, Angie Davis added specialty coffee to the scratch-made bakery she opened in 2014. Her small town quickly decided it could not do without either. What began as a beloved bakery has grown into a community anchor, earning Angie’s Sugar Buzz Bakery the title of Best Business of the Year from the Sandwich Area Chamber of Commerce in 2025.
Reaching year five, let alone year 12, is a milestone many businesses never achieve. Congratulations, Angie.
Year Seven: The Right Moment, Seven Years Running
Kairos Coffee – Wilmington, Ohio (February 8, 2019)

The dream blossomed from there, growing into a space that now feels essential to the community’s daily life.
Year Eight: Still Packed on a Tuesday Morning
Rolls by the Pound – Newark, Ohio (February 14, 2018)
The coffee shop and bakery has spent eight years growing in Newark, building a memorable brand, a loyal following, and a Valentine’s Day anniversary that locals now treat as its unofficial birthday.
Over time, it has become part of the town’s daily rhythm, serving morning regulars, weekend families, and customers who measure the years by its seasonal flavors and steady presence. Signature cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls anchor the menu, alongside mocha lattes and other crowd favorites, all delivered with friendly service that keeps the drive-thru line steady and the reviews strong.
Cup Runneth Over – Sweetwater, Tennessee (February 28, 2018)
Cup Runneth Over has been Sweetwater’s gathering place for eight years and recently changed hands. In a small town, that kind of continuity is its own measure of success. Nestled in the heart of downtown, the coffeehouse pairs exceptional coffee with an inviting, eclectic space where no two tables are quite the same.
The spirit of the shop extends beyond the counter, reflected in its motto, “It’s not about the coffee. It’s about what happens over coffee.”
Year Nine: Nearly a Decade on the Carolina Coast
Kozy Bean Cafe – Southport, North Carolina (February 24, 2017)
Southport is a small coastal town where visitors come for the scenery and locals come for the community. After nine years as part of both, Kozy Bean is entering its next chapter under new ownership and a new name.
Nearly a decade in, Kozy Bean has become one of those dependable spots where atmosphere matters as much as what is in the cup. The cafe welcomes guests with cozy indoor seating and an outdoor patio furnished with comfortable lounge seating and strung with soft, overhead lights.
Year Twenty-Two: Two Decades of Growth
Main Street Coffee – Ardmore, Oklahoma (February 10, 2004)
February 2004. George W. Bush was in his first term. Facebook did not exist. The iPhone was three years away. And in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Main Street Coffee opened its doors.
Main Street Coffee has now been open for 22 years. It has served through two recessions, a global pandemic, and more changing consumer trends than anyone could have predicted in 2004.
It is still there on Main Street, earning the loyalty of the Ardmore community one cup at a time.
Twenty-two years is not a streak. It is what happens when an operator builds something for the community rather than for the market cycle, and when that community decides to protect what it loves.
We are proud to have been part of that story from the very beginning.
Independent Coffee, Built to Last

Longevity is built one regular at a time through consistent quality, community engagement, and disciplined operations. The 7 Steps to Success program gives coffee shop owners the foundation they need to stay grounded and keep growing.
Congratulations to the owners of all 14 shops. You’ve shown that independent coffee shops can thrive in almost any neighborhood, in good times and bad.
